Data Centers were Big Losers in the Midterm Election

While Republican candidates tended to have a relatively bad day in the midterm election on Tuesday, data centers fared much worse in local ballot measures.

As related by Veronika Kyrylenko in a Thursday New American article, voters on Tuesday approved nearly all of the roughly 50 local ballot measures across the country opposed to data centers, and did so in many cases by very high margins. Further, suggested Kyrylenko, the enthusiasm among some Republican politicians, including President Donald Trump, for aiding the building of more data centers gave Democratic candidates an effective criticism to bring before voters, most of whom are antagonistic to data centers being built near them. “Democrats capitalized on the backlash, criticizing Republican opponents over rising electricity costs, generous corporate subsidies, and unchecked development,” wrote Kyrylenko.
